Moving Kids Overseas
Moving
overseas can be stressful, exciting, and sometimes overwhelming for kids.
They too have accept idea of starting over, meeting new friends, and adjusting
to a new school and new city. It can be hard for them to express how they're
feeling during this emotional time. It is important for older members
of the family to help their children succeed.
Here are a few tips to help make the overseas move easier on your
family:
Inform the children of the decision to move. Include them in any
choices that you can. Listen to their thoughts
and opinions.
Be very open about the changes everyone is going through. Try
to accept other's help and be supportive.
Purchase an address book for your child to keep track of their
friend's names and phone numbers. Purchase a computer
with the internet or stamps and stationary.
Try to take your child to visit your new home before moving there.
Conduct research about the new country. If you
will be learning a new language, take classes before you
move to help the adjustment.
Let your kids participate in packing up their bedroom. Allow them
to keep special things with them instead of putting
the items in boxes. Allow extra room for these things
while traveling.
Once you have arrived at your new home, take time with your children
to explore the area around your house. Visit places of interest
and purchase maps.
Most importantly, make sure your children have the support they
need in dealing with the stresses of moving.
